Last year the part Irish, part French, all performer Camille O’Sullivan was given a four star review from this very magazine, something that most performers would be thrilled with, but by her standards this review must have been a disappointment as she has proudly garnered five star reviews every single year she has performed at this Festival. The problem was a new set list of songs that didn’t quite deliver on the goose bump factor combined with an unsuitable venue, the Queens Hall, a fine location but the charm of Camille O’Sullivan is to look you dead in the eyes and break your heart, sometime she couldn’t quite do there.
For those that were left slightly disappointed by her 2008 performance should fear not. Camille is now performing at The Assembly Hall, a venue better suited to squeeze in the sold out crowds who deservedly queue right around the block to see her perform. Camille is back to her very best, bringing a ferocious, infectious energy as she delivers a stunning set list, singing dark, enchanting and gutsy covers from the likes of Nick Cave, David Bowie and Tom Waits, including a powerful cover of Nin Inch Nails, ‘Hurt’, a version so awe inspiring you never want it to end.
Cut in between the darkness is some terrific and hilarious audience interaction, for she is of a mischievous mood, acting foolishly, bunny hopping around the stage, tormenting unsuspecting audience members as she sits on their knee, something that adds to the charm that is Camille O’Sullivan. She is anything but predictable.
She’s back and thank God for it, since the Fringe is a much better place to be with her in it.
