In the years between 1942 and 1977, Roy Sullivan was struck by lightning on seven separate occasions, surviving each of them and gaining himself a place in the Guinness World Records. Chris McCausland uses this fantastic life story as the background for his stand up show, 7 Strikes.
McCausland is clearly very passionate about life and analysing his own experiences against those who have had, what he perceives to be, a more or less fulfilling a life. This show has a variety of high and low points showing that McCausland has a refined ability to perform and write comic sets out with the immediate assumption that, just because he is a blind comedian, he will only perform observational comedy about blind people.
His tale about the lighting fan disaster and drunken attempts at igniting his cigarette on a George Foreman and 60watt light bulb are hilarious. However the low points of his performance come when McCausland appears to veer off his rehearsed performance, pushing for laughs that aren’t forthcoming which gets the audience into an uncomfortable silence. Even so, McCausland is attune to his audience and doesn’t dwell on his unsuccessful jokes moving on so as not to leave his audience in a state of disappointment.
Overall, McCausland delivers a good performance worth the ticket price.
