Four pale faced storytellers come forward and begin to tell us the story of Lilly, a skinny, ragged puppet who is consumed with loneliness after the death of her father. Desperate, she decides to follow him into the dead lands – the world between life and death. So begins her journey in a world of lingering gloom perused by a creature known as Rotten Pockets and the constant fear of losing all memory of her father.
The River People Theatre Company has created a stunning performance for the whole family set in a world of equal beauty and danger. There is no attempt to conceal the feeling of isolation and grief that Lilly feels on her journey. But despite the subject matter, it manages to find beauty in the darkness as she meets characters along the way who see death in a very different light, which help remind Lilly not to forget about what she still has to live for.
A beautiful piece of storytelling that makes best use of a forever changing set, which in itself feels like a character in a story that takes you on a voyage dealing with grief, loneliness and acceptance, told with the stunning imagery that could come from a Tim Burton film. If you enjoy puppetry then this is a performance you cannot afford to miss.
