We all cringe at awkward social situations, be it when we are stuck in an elevator with some very random neighbours, or someone sits on a bus besides us who turns out to be a pest. It is also uncomfortable to watch when a comedy show goes wrong, and laughs are scarce, and you see the sweat of the performers on stage, their eyes flickering with panic.
It is a wonder if Tomfoolery (who are good enough to pull this kind of show through, even if they almost fail at it) intended their show to be so self-referential in their awkwardness they so talk about, but there are some sketches which just fail to deliver the laughs they work so hard for. They do start quite strongly, their first twenty minutes flying by, with plenty of clever and planned gags which have the audience in stitches. It is after an iffy middle section that the show starts to falter, ending the show in an uncomfortable piece about the joy of sex, warming up a penis under someone’s armpit and traditional music. If it sounds nonsensical, it’s because it is. Moreover, it has members of the audience leaving before it ends.
This is not to say that both Toms are not talented, if slightly rusty. They do have great comedy timing, and their chemistry together is palpable, it is the material that needs some reworking, bringing more of their bus sketches and less of their big-headed man segments. The audience do laugh, but it needs to be proven if it is because of them, or just simply at them.
