Earning the title as one of Britain’s best dance groups is 2FaCed, who return to Edinburgh with the brilliant show “Still Breathing”. This is confident highly charged physical dance from a group of men that are clearly close. Tamsin Fitzgerald’s choreography pushes these dancers and challenges the audience throughout the performance.
The eight performers are drawn from ballet, contemporary dance and break dancing backgrounds, creating a new form of urban ballet, or sophisticated break dance. They combine these skills with a decent whack of acrobatics and a lot of strength in their exploration of space and movement.
Their dance is flawless and the gorgeous lads are supremely self assured. While the choreography could be a little edgier at times, and the core idea of space could have been challenged a little more, it still retains a gritty feel, emphasized by the spartan set, dub music, basic lighting and minimal costumes.
The dancers use repeating patterns slowly becoming more complex and detailed. The music and dance grows a little darker and more surreal towards the end of the piece, leaving the audience a little disquieted, but “Still Breathing”.
This show proves that 2FaCeD’s reputation as one of the hottest British dance acts is well deserved, and it looks like they’ll keep that title for a long while yet.
If physical theatre isn’t usually your thing, don’t be put off. 2FaCeD will leave you gasping and cheering for more.
