It is refreshing to go into a stand up comedian and hear him being so honest about everything. Comedians tend to over exaggerate stories, or make up stuff up for the benefit of laughs, but with Des Bishop you have the feeling that every word that comes out of his mouth is true.
Bishop might be a bit of the laddish comedy territory, but don’t let that scare you, he is just laddish in his delivery, not his themes, and he does talk about ‘emotions’ (even if he rejects the idea of sentimentality), and human interactions. His best moments, come at the start, when members of the public are still coming in, and he interacts with them, and towards the end, when masturbation, and how as we grow up we learn to be more blasse about it, gets the audience roaring with laughter.
In between, Des talks about being Irish and American at the same time, a trip to Australia he did with fellow comedian Jason Byrne (also playing at the Assembly), Barack Obama’s presidency… They don’t seem like ground breaking comedy themes, and they aren’t, but in Des Bishop’s mouth, they become comedy gold. He knows how to bring alive the most mundane of situations, and his honest approach is very attractive (even though if he admits himself that, to feel attracted to him halfway through his routine, you need to be completely bonkers).
Bishop might not be, yet, amongst the biggest headlining names out there, and he might not be as known as Adam Hills, Rhod Gilbert or Byrne himself, but these should worry since, in the future, he could very easy surpassed them at their own game.
