Last year’s winner of the if.comedy award David O’Doherty makes a much welcome return to the Fringe. Beginning the show with a cracking song, “Lower your expectations”, you know you are in for a fun ride. The title may lead to you thinking he wants to party but instead he sings and does some stand-up, which he does so very well. Covering topics such as Twitter, Facebook, iPhones and being a peeping tom he has a great mix of material.
All of his songs seem either horribly or beautifully crafted, it is difficult to judge as he plays each note. But rest assure they are extremely funny. The transfer between stand-up and keyboard playing is so nicely done that it is difficult to tell which is better. His best feature is that he tells stories rather than jokes, almost akin to Billy Connolly. With that in mind you just believe him that little bit more that he has actually experienced most of the events he talks about.
There may be no focus on the show title but who cares when each joke is flawlessly delivered. You can tell why he won last year’s award. With his Irish charm he only needs to speak the truth and he’s automatically funny.
Don’t be afraid of the hype, he is definitely worth seeing.
