Last time round Charles Ross brought us his “One Man Star Wars Show”, which was excellent. He also promised that at the next Edinburgh Festival he would bring the One Man Lord of the Rings show much to the excitement of the crowd.
The premise if you haven’t worked it out already, is based on all three Lord of the Rings films. Imagine it as a compilation of all the best bits and fast forwarded all into a 60-minute show. He sings, he dances, he jumps around a lot, he does absolutely everything you can imagine one man and no props can do.
This may not sound like everyone’s cup of tea but it is an essential play to see. Even if you are not a fan of the books or films, its almost a certainty you will enjoy it. From the opening prologue to the final harrowing scenes everything vital to the plot is included.
His impressions are spot on, in particular the one of “tree beard”, which is very amusing. Also his physical acting ability is terrific and the overall showmanship is fantastic.
People may say there is no originality in copying an idea. What Charles has managed to do though is create something completely unique that even the most die-hard LOTR fans will love. His energy throughout is nothing short of outstanding. One of the most skilfully crafted shows you will see at the festival.
