Returning for its third consecutive year, The Edinburgh Festival’s most enjoyable night out is back. To those that are scratching their heads as to just what a silent disco is then permit me to explain: Two djs transmitting their sets live on two separate FM radio frequencies, with the aid of special headphones you can set your ideal volume and with a flick of a switch flip between the radio stations resulting in a gloriously chaotic room full of people singing along in the silence at the top of their lungs and dancing enthusiastically to a tune sometimes completely different to those around you. A strange concept to some but boy is it fun. It attracts sold out crowds, and leaves no one in the corner nursing their pints, instead everyone is up for it on the dance floor.
Flipping between all out pop gems, guilty pleasure tunes, ambient, techno, rock power ballads and some great dance records this wide mix of genres means that there is something for everyone to throw some moves too while manically grinning at those around you.
Some minor grumbles aside, at maximum capacity the headphones do begin to crackle and the beautiful setting of The McEwan hall comes at a cost, there is a strict no alcohol on the dance floor policy, which is a nuisance if understandable, not that every ones wallets will be able to sustain a heavy night of booze as their bar sells what must be the most expensive gin and tonic in the city.
