There is a good thing about shows like ‘Adam, Jason & Friends’. Even if the quality on stage is great, but the night you see them doesn’t seem to show, you know you can go another night and it will be a totally different matter.
The idea of ‘Adam, Jason & Friend’ is having both Adam Hills and Jason Byrne (who, let’s be honest, are comedy geniuses) in un-scripted form, introducing a number of acts (their ‘friends’) for an hour and half. Normally, Adam and Jason together is as much fun as comedy can get. With great chemistry, and a double act that works beautifully (they do, after all, present Assembly’s Gala Launch each year), it is a wonder how sometimes these close friends y just don’t seem to click. Mind you, even when they are not at their best, this duo are still far better than 80% of comedians out there.
As the group of ‘friends’ changes from night to night, giving a review of their performances doesn’t do justice to the overall show, but it is a wonder who chose two comedians whose jokes just die on stage. Rich Hall in particular, a re-knowed funny comedian, just falls flat in a painful 15 minutes act, where laughs are nowhere to be seen.
The night is saved by Ali McGregor’s two songs (at the start and end of the act), but that is easy to say, since Ali’s voice, is astonishingly beautiful, and her charisma, charm and beauty always makes for an excellent time.
So maybe this showing of ‘Adam, Jason & Friends’ isn’t (or wasn’t for that matter) the best this two exceptional comedians have got in themselves. That is not to say that, on a different night they won’t shine as they usually do. Anyone can have a bad day, or night, after all.
