BBC Comedy Presents is a genius idea in an ever-growing Fringe programme: every night a different, unannounced line up of talented comedians, who are on stage about 15 mins each. The other night saw Susan Calman, Daniel Simonsen, Jarlath Regan, Pete Firman and Reginald D. Hunter.
Also acting as MC, Calman does a fantastic job of warming up the crowd with her much appreciated jokes about her Glaswegian despise for London. She sometimes pushes her loud, shrieky persona a bit too much, but what eventually shines through is her warm, cheerful personality and her incredibly energy that reaches everyone in the room. Simonsen, however, is by far the weakest comedian of all, and he delivers easy lines that seem dutifully learnt. Next is the very likeable Jarlath Regan with original (difficult to find at the Fringe) jokes that keep the audience laughing without a rest. His positive energy and great interaction with the crowd clearly highlight him as one of the future big names of the Festival.
Next on stage is the very charismatic magician-comedian Pete Firman, whose catch line is “jokes and tricks”. Alternating voluntarily cheesy puns with a constant teasing of the crowd, Firman fascinates his audience who asks for more when his 15 minutes are over. Last but not least, Hunter looks even more relaxed than usual from not having to stick to his script, and leads the adoring audience through his favourite stories. The ‘name’ of the night, his act is longer and leaves everybody delighted.
Everyone is due to enjoy at least two of each night’s comedians, so come along!
