Which outdated, unfashionable accessory would you rather see preserved: the Daily Mail, or the moustache? If your answer is the former, you might be advised that an early night is in order, to be sure to bag a copy of the next morning’s issue before your nearest newsagent sells out. However, if it is the latter, then William Hammer-Lloyd’s 11pm show could be more to your liking.
In ‘Is the Daily Mail Dead Yet?’ Hammer-Lloyd betrays his upper middle class conservative background. Sporting a pencil moustache he looks like a young John Cleese, only he is wearing baggy jeans and t-shirt.
It is a tall stage that only serves to make the lanky Hammer-Lloyd appear giant-like. But, in spite of a grounding in politics and teaching, Will resists the temptation to address his audience with informed authority. Instead, he lets the facts speak for themselves as would a bemused scientist, pointing out that the Daily Mail has claimed Facebook gives you cancer and that the only things good for you are vitamin D and reading the Daily Mail.
The moustache, in its refined eccentricity, reminds Hammer-Lloyd’s audience of what is worth preserving as he relays experiences of adjusting to life in paradoxical 21st Century England. A treat for the disaffected middle-Englander, you will struggle to find a better late-night show at this year’s Fringe.
