The Pleasance Courtyard has been harbouring a secret, a wonderful little secret, and her name is Rachel Rose Reid. Young, talented and beautiful, this award winning storyteller for one brief hour takes you far away from the frantic bustle of the Fringe, deep into your imagination, and tells captivating and charming ancient folk tales and songs from all over the world with such energy and vigour that the crowd are powerless to her charms.
These stories focus mainly on the notion of the Princess and they are a joy to hear. Discussing stories such as the ancient Greek tale about why there are changing seasons, an Italian folk tale about a nun and a monk falling in love these tales flip between the silly to the sombre, the real and the fantastic, the intimate and the epic and are handled with master precision. Almost two weeks into her run Reid’s set story-pieces have become honed to perfection, every line and nuance has been finely tuned to maximum effect and she has a genuine ability to convey beautiful imagery with the simplest turn of phrase or hand movement.
In between her tales are some choice musical numbers and Reid reveals herself to not only be a fine storyteller but also a gifted singer, delivering her songs with such infectious gusto that the audience are more than happy to clap and sing along.
This is a funny, touching hour of laughter and darkness and well worth a late night visit.
