The Dog Eared collective presents their latest creation, The Apocalypse Roadshow, a delightfully bonkers and charming sketch show involving four characters who volunteer at ni-nightline, a phone service that helps people with the end of the world. Lord knows what is going on in the plot, but you will have far too much fun to care as these four comedians do a fantastic job bringing a host of brilliantly wacky and most importantly very funny characters to the crowds and for once don’t overplay the warped ideas in place of the sketches.
That’s not to say that the ideas aren’t out there, far, far from it, in fact, as we follow the Swiss Hadron Collider reinterpreted as a Christian dance movement, Tom Cruise trying to seduce the crowds onto his party bus, Rex Duddery and his theories of evolution and aliens on planet Uterus. Imaginative and delivered with a joyous enthusiasm these characters tear through costume changes and have ideas to burn all the time wringing some great belly laughs from their material.
This is a random, frantic hour long show that only sometimes suffers from being a little too out there as in the case of the worlds economy being dealt with by a mimed slow motion fight between banks as the only option to save the economy. Topical, if baffling the audience has literally no idea what is going to happen next, right through to the wonderful audience participation musical number finale which has each and every member of the crowd grinning from ear to ear and wondering what on Earth they have just bared witness to.
