It is a pity when you see talent on stage, but the material they are working with is just not good enough. ‘Unsupervised Detention’ has a neat premise: four kids are left after school on detention for misbehaving. There is no work to be done, but just need to ponder about their future.
Problem is, what comes after is a succession of sketches that go from the funny and sublime (like the dog applying for a position in an airport as a sniffer canine), to the extremely bizarre and unfunny. In the middle you get some amusing moments and clever ideas, but they fail to have that little bit extra to make them hilarious.
On the other hand, the four actors are very talented and good at morphing into the different characters they play easily. Alex Bothwell has some fantastic comedy timing, and her impressions are the best of the bunch. Dan Woods too, impresses with his singing abilities and talent, and while Sophie Brooke and Donald Newholm might not be of the same caliber (yet), they are very good too.
With a bit of time, and reworking some of the sketches, Unsupervised Detention could be a great show full of gags and laughter. Maybe dropping the surreal scenarios for more of an underlying theme throughout the act, would benefit them enormously.
