The Free Fringe is a mixed bag at best, but you will not find a more mixed bundle of rag-tag characters than at the Utter! Spoken word competition. The premise is simple, think X-factor but instead of singing these dozen or so are poets, who each have two minutes to wow the judges getting through to the next round before the finale, where the audience must choose who gets through to the impending finals with a prize of £100 and an exclusive night for the winner at compere Richard Tyrone Jones’ club.
The poets themselves are a mixed bag ranging from the God awful, Chris and his poem about rabbits complete with bunny hand puppet springs to mind; the beautiful, a romantic promise between two lovers form Ernie Burns and the way, way out there such as pensioner Jasmine John and his jazz-beat poetry. But all of them are nothing less than entertaining and its a lot of fun wondering what on Earth is going to happen next.
This is a fun if mixed, little hour that makes a refreshing change from never ending list of comedians at the Free Fringe.
