Whoever first proclaimed that it was a mistake in the performance world to work with children has clearly never encountered Patrick Monahan.
Monahan, who is better known as a stand up comedian to an adult audience, has this year decided to bring his comedy to much younger viewers. In this story of a young shepherd boy, Monahan weaves a delightful tale through music and dance, while utilising the exuberance and involvement of his audience. No child is too young to be involved in the beauty of this performance. At times you are left wondering where the story began as Monahan seamlessly works with the ideas and input of his young audience. You are left with the impression that every performance will probably be entirely different and as such, worth multiple viewings.
The children are given the feeling that they are truly part of this performance from opportunities to join him on stage to the frequent appearances he makes within the audience itself. Adults, babies, young children and pre-teens are all made to feel part of this performance but never patronised. It’s a winning combination where everyone’s input is valued and enjoyed.
He is truly gifted performer who engages and enchants his audience – young and old alike – with a mixture of story and humour.
