With stories within stories, talking pigs and a “happily ever after” ending, The Princess and the Pea – and the Pigman is a joy for all family members. Making use of a very quirky and minimal set, and some clever costume changes, the actors interact with the young audience, bringing alive the love story of a Princess in search of a special Prince, and a Prince in love with the bored, slightly mean, but stunning princess.
While the audience is asked to help the two protagonists in their love quest, the play follows the story of the Prince who disguises himself as a pigman, hoping to make fun of the princess who has previously laughed at him. The problem is, he is in fact very much in love with her, and a series of misunderstandings makes it impossible for both protagonists to stay together. Enter the talking pigs (who love nothing more than have their bellies tickled), who will try their best to bring around the happy ending every fairytale deserves.
Little girls will love this fantasy land where princesses are always beautiful and get (almost) everything they desire, while the boys will laugh at the bossy queen, the silly king, and the riotous farm animals. Adults, on the other hand, will rejoice at the simplistic but effective delivery of the two small stories, beautifully rendered with the use of small puppets and props. Sweet and funny, The Princess and the Pea – and the Pigman will enchant kids and adults alike.
