The rap guide to human nature is an hour long discussion of the latest theories of evolutional psychology using rap as a medium. This is the latest of several shows Brinkman has performed using rap as his way of exploring academic themes.
As a rap performance Brinkman uses a fairly energetic but soft metre along with very few rap cliché’s. The DJ (Mr Simmonds) offers sublime backing tracks that are masterfully presented, accentuating Brinkman’s delivery without dominating. The act treats its audience not only to an amazingly polished act but also to an impressive display of free styling as the show’s finale covers any points that audience believe to have been glossed over.
Brinkman sits in an interesting position as his work is inspirational and intelligent whist still being true to its hip hop roots. He bravely submits his work to peer review by submitting it to the authors that he uses as inspiration and including their feedback into the show. This alone adds credence to his work especially seeing as not all of their comments are said in particularly flattering tone.
The Rap guide to human nature is an amazing anomaly, genuinely entertaining, educational and engaging.
