Most of us have been there, have lived this story, or at least seen it from up close.’ Fresher. The Musical’ is a high energy tale of 5 young people thrown together at the whim of the university accommodation people and the ensuing chaos is peppered heavily with laughs, arguments and a few tears.
The cast are all strong performers and present believable, if stock characters. It is the ‘everyman’ version of the experience, and so the balance is perfect to ensure that the common scenarios can be explored. Both sexual and social politics are played on to good effect. The laughs elicited from the audience are many and loud. The songs, while not ones that will stick in your head, work very well to present the full emotional impact that is expected from a musical, in both the comedic numbers and the more heart-felt sadder numbers.
The singers are all good and do not need the radio microphones to project into the space, though the balance in the opening number is something that needs to be carefully considered. The exploration of the individual’s secrets and insecurities meshes well with the optimism that permeates the period of life that this musical depicts. New friendships (or enmities) which will last for ever, and eternal passions confused with raging hormones, all tinged with the pain and messy misunderstandings that are common to such new situations. A great production with a strong cast telling a story that both resonates and entertains.
