A clever storyline with a multilayer plot, Swing! provides you with an insight into the lives of the residents of a suburban street and the scandalous happenings surrounding the Under 16 Tennis Championship.
With an air of Desperate Housewives, we are introduced to the characters, one by one, through song and comedic skits. A hot tennis coach (aptly named Straddlebottom) is drooled over by frustrated wives, gossip ensues as a new family moves into the street, romance blossoms for high school teens and scheming parents come up with a plan to ensure nothing ruins their “perfect”, suburban lives.
As the soap-opera unfolds, we are treated to a tongue-in-cheek script combined with an exceptional score. Each problematic climax receiving its own glorious song (and even a Hebrew Rap), this show is an ideal introduction to theatre for any “soap” addict. The characters are ripened to perfection and the acting talent is strong. Mesmerising and pitch-perfect performances from Calum Melville (as the Postman, Teacher and star tennis player) and Meg Powell-Chandler (as the innocent, yet feisty, Pansy Windsor) allow the audience a sneak preview of stars in the making.
It is shows like this one that provide audiences with the bread and butter staple of a great Fringe feast. Full of scandal, high school love and (of course) swinging, Swing! will provide any Fringe-goer with a very satisfying entrée of sugary treats to come.
