Britain’s Got Talent finalists Flawless are probably the most widely known dance act appearing at this year’s Fringe. The ten-piece troupe from London recently appeared in hit movie Street Dance 3D and given that they have been described by Simon Cowell as “one of the best things I’ve ever seen”, it is no surprise that the Udderbelly is jam-packed with excited families.
Introduced by a video projection (which is used imaginatively throughout the hour-long performance) the first routine gives you exactly what you came for – a high energy soundtrack of mashed-up pop favourites, a staggering combination of backflips, worms and headstands and supertight choreography worthy of a Michael Jackson video.
But what happens next is even better. Subsequent routines provide a diverse mix of humour, excitement, introspection and social commentary, designed and performed with an artistic intelligence that is as impressive as it is unexpected. Flawless emerge as an act that has something valuable to say to 21st century Britain, and are as capable of accessibly tackling issues like homelessness, alcohol abuse and self-esteem as they are of providing the thrilled children with a high-energy display of athleticism and fun.
If only there was one word to describe a show in which there are no mistakes, immaculately conceived and executed, completely devoid of errors, without fault and completely bungle-free. Oh wait a minute…
