The McEwan Hall is situated right next to the Gilded Balloon and is certainly one of Edinburgh Festival’s most beautiful Fringe venues and it is also one of the largest capacity sites, seating over 1000. How better to fill every seat than with comedy behemoth Jim Jeffries who has had five sell out runs during the Fringe as he is known as one of the most loved and shocking comedians around.
Jeffries has been growing in stature in America and now lives there permanently but its refreshing to see that Jeffries has lost none of his frank and brutally honest wit. In fact if anything he is edgier than he has ever been as he launches into playful yet irony free subjects such as lesbianism, being bi-polar, absurd notes from studios about the pilot he is writing, and the Holocaust.
His comedy may be dangerously close to the knuckle at times, delivered in a straight talking foul mouthed rant that has just as many swear words as verbs. While not for everyone there is much to admire in Jeffries’ routine as he bats joke after joke to the roaring crowd and hits them with laser precision.
Hysterical, filthy and pleasantly shocking Jeffries almost has you fooled into believing his façade. That is until he tells a long, drawn out, almost tender tale, as tender as a tale can be about a disabled man and a hooker, that reveals him to be far more than his gruff exterior would have you believe.
Jeffries is back and looks like he’s getting another sell out Fringe run. Book early.
