Saucy Jack and the Space Vixen’s is a cult musical based on a distant planet, Frottage 3, in a seedy nightclub called Saucy Jack’s, so named after its proprietor the infamous Jack. It is home to a bizarre and entertaining array of characters who spend their nights wowing the local crowds with singing, dancing and a variety of other entertainment. We are guided through the obscure events that unfold by Dr Willy Von Whackoff whom acts as guide and narrator at various points throughout the evening. It is an upbeat, vibrant, intimate comedy that ensures the audience feel involved in the events that unfold from the murder that opens the play to the entrance of the spectacular Vixens, a space aged crime fighting trio who uphold piece and justice while ensuring that men are still fully educated in the ways of satisfying their women.
With a minimal set and limited space the cast and production team on this show have gone to every effort to ensure that their audience gets the most from this show as possible. From the outset you are not only spectating but become part of the staging itself, encouraged by the actors to interact when appropriate which includes purchasing drinks from Mitch Maypole, the bartender character, as the show progresses. Unfortunately some of the characters don’t stand out as you would expect and at times the audience miss much of the vital humour especially from the character of Whackoff. The actress playing Jubilee Climax is quite tentative in her role and doesn’t hold her own against some of the stronger actors in the group. Alternatively the character of Booby Chevale is played with style, grace and an innocent strength that allows the audience to really relate and still enjoy the comedy of the character.
If you enjoy upbeat, obscure stories then Saucy Jack’s would be a good addition to your festival but be prepared to love some of it but perhaps not all.
