The powerful sound of the wadaiko drums, combined with the energetic, and animated movement of the performers captivates the audience from the first beat on these awe inspiring instruments. The intense blend of music, theatre and culture on show can be found nowhere else at the Fringe this year. The leader of the ‘Tokara’ group, and internationally acclaimed taiko master, Art Lee, takes time to connect the importance of the message in and behind the music. This interaction with the audience gives the performance an intimacy that is hard to find in a venue of 300 people.
The colossal sound emanating from the drums saturates the space, and reverberates right in to your soul. The almighty sound is created effortlessly through the performers grace and sheer enjoyment of their art form. The pleasure they derive from performing is unmistakable in their expression. They transfer that joy to the crowd with their infectious enthusiasm, and keep them mesmerised throughout. However, the performance is about more than just the sound. The flowing movements that compliment each beat have their roots in both Japanese and Chinese martial arts. This individual characteristic of the group amalgamates the performance in its entirety to create an evening of majestic atmosphere and excitement.
Seeing Tenchi Shinmei will guarantee you a night of visual and aural pleasure this August.
