Without a second to catch breath from laughing, Caroline Rhea’s hour flies past, quicker than you would like. Those expecting Rhea to recount stories of her time on ‘Sabrina Teenage Witch’ will be slightly disappointed. Although she does talk about the show, she is eager to address the questions on the television series initially, so she can move on to other topics. For this we should be glad, since Rhea has plenty more to give than just funny memoirs of a sitcom.
Dealing with everything from sex to her daughter, school years and celebrities, Rhea laughs with the audience at her own jokes, her contagious laughter adding extra hilarity to the evening. She does tend to jump from subject to subject, sometimes even leaving stories halfway through, however the audience doesn’t seem to object, more enthralled by the whole Rhea experience than by a subsidiary story she forgets to finish.
Her interaction with members of the audience is also pitch-perfect. Scared of causing too much offence, she repeats ‘I’m kidding, I love you’ several times, not realising that the audience don’t mind being the butt of her jokes, since it is executed without malice and in the name of fun. When a comedian is this entertaining, being gently ridiculed for your accent, age or facial expressions is more of an honour than anything else. It means Rhea has actually noticed you out there, and you should count yourself lucky.
The hour flies past, leaving you wanting more, the sign of a true star on stage.
