3 days before the U.S. general election, Senator Barack Obama falls into a hope induced coma leaving his campaign team in a dilemma. Thankfully they happen upon Charlie, an actor in musical theatre with an uncanny resemblance to the Senator. All that’s left to do is manage to convince the media and general public of the façade.
This musical comedy, written by four young students from Trinity College Dublin, goes over and above what one would expect from a student production of this genre. A high-energy show filled with consistently witty, intelligent and culturally relevant humour that never fails to impress.
With particularly standout performances from Charlie (Aaron Heffernan) who gives a clever and accomplished performance as the faux-senator and Joe Biden (Eoghan Quinn) who evokes a Ron Burgundy-esque character with a penchant for porn and drugs, this production hits all the right notes, and its sell out performances reflect that. The musical numbers are also well spaced and manage never to detract from the momentum of the plot, something that musicals can often suffer from.
Overall Obama Mia! is a hysterical romp that offers something for viewers both old and young, it is topical, sharp and original with some off-the-wall gags that had the audience in stitches. The writers will be ones to watch in the future.
