Pippa Evans’s angsty US country rock diva alter-ego Loretta Maine returns to the Fringe armed wtih her backing band, the charmingly named ‘Dog Vagina’. With an hour-long spot, a powerful set of lungs, mean and moody (but comedic) songs about hate and an attitude that make Courtney Love look like a wall flower. She has a finger to point – repeatedly, and to the heart.
Her finger occupied with either playing acoustic guitar or swinging a bottle of white wine (a comfort blanket), it is Maine’s fast-talking mouth, both shouty and sinister. Her mother, an adversary from High School and an unsympathetic music industry have induced a psychotic imbalance (Katie Melua and Pixie Lott are two case studies), but it’s Maine’s ex-boyfriends who bear the real brunt, becoming an ex in a very final sense.
With a warm singing voice and solid melodies, Maine takes on elements of Alanis Morissette and Courtney Love. Wild, sexy and drunk, she is both emotional wreck and vicious revenge-wreaker. Men will want her; women will want to be her. Both should take out restraining orders in case she comes anywhere near you.
This is musical character stand-up comedy of the highest order, make sure you get a ticket.
