Wrong jobs, break ups, unfulfilled dreams… The Fringe is always full of musicals dealing with the lives of 20-something guys who are disenchanted with their lives. And ‘Next Thing You Know’ doesn’t really offer anything new to the genre. Couple are unhappy, couple split, couple miss each other… you can guess the rest.
It’s a pity though, since the cast try their utmost to make this show entertaining, and you can actually see that they believe in what they do, and love it. Even if they can’t always hit the right notes (and the high ones are never reached), you can see the potential on stage waiting to be discovered and pointed in the right direction. Greg Herst is convincing as Luke, someone who has been hurt on the past and has grown to be immune to love. Both Rachel Holbrook as Waverly and Sarah Wolff as Lisa perform well in their roles, though Wolff is left without much to do. Phillip Rowntree as Darren is a decent enough actor also, though his performance feels a bit two-toned, never letting his emotions ring true to his words.
There isn’t anything especially inventive or new in the production, and forgettable tunes don’t help matters, but at least the acting skills are good enough to not make this hour-long show a total bore.
