Elis James has a talent for taking something as undistinguished as the British day trip, and turning it in to a comic delight. His self-depreciating style does a wonderful job of conveying the awkwardness of the varying unfortunate situations Elis has found himself in over the past year. Everything from his self-confessed obsession with Welsh band Gorky’s Zygotic Monkey, to his horror at toilet habits in mainland Europe, feature in this diverse routine. It would seem that in life Elis has an uncanny knack of saying entirely the wrong thing at the wrong time. Thankfully this is not the case at all with his stand up routine. Everything is timed to perfection, with every rendition of an uncomfortable moment being punctuated with timely silences or noises that sends a wave of uneasy hilarity through the room.
His honesty is well appreciated and allows the audience to associate and empathise with his moments of embarrassment. He concocts images of his own social misdemeanours with convincing clarity, encouraging the crowd to revel in his inept handling of awkward coincidences. The material would appear to be all a little degrading of James’s life, however the contrast between this and his upbeat and buoyant delivery tie the performance together seamlessly. At only £5 Elis James is a steal at this years Fringe, this is certainly a show not to be missed.
