When you think of Fame, you think of catchy tunes, great dancing, fun parties and all the glitz and razzmatazz that goes along with it. This couldn’t be further than the truth. Fame – The Musical deals with the kids that are aspiring to attain fame, the nobodies trying to be somebodies.
After a successful but grim movie, a television series, and a horrendous 2009 movie remake, this musical doesn’t have much to add to the subject matter and as such we are essentially left with a re-hash of old storylines and copies of once-loved characters. As such, without any new insight, the show feels vapid and is rather forgettable.
So it’s kudos to the actors that the show doesn’t fall flat in its face, since they, at least, have the charisma and talent to make an uninspired adaptation an enjoyable experience, albeit an ultimately disposable one. Some musical numbers do give you goose bumps at the back of your neck, while there are certain unexplored themes that show the promise of something that could have been. But overall the whole show feels a bit overlong, irrelevant and rushed – an interesting world left unexplored. On the whole, then, a fairly interesting production let down by a rushed storyline that glosses over the life of two-dimensional characters and cliched situations.
