The audience make their way into the wooden ark and settle themselves round the (faux) fireplace, awaiting a bedtime story – or several – from some of the top comedians on the Fringe.
Storytellers’ Club is enthusiastically hosted by Sarah Bennetto, and features other guest comedians such as Jo Caulfield, Mark Allen and Patrick Monahan. The line-up changes nightly and the theme of the tales also varies, for example there are scary stories one night and love stories the next. This is potentially the show’s biggest weakness since not all comedians are equally skilled in storytelling, so the quality of the show – and therefore the audience experience – will vary from night to night. On the other hand, with several comedians appearing each night it is likely that you will find something which appeals and the changing themes and line-ups means that you could return on another occasion and still hear something new.
Audience members can also contribute, as they are invited to write a short story of 5 words or fewer as they wait to enter the ark. These are read out during the show and prizes are awarded for the best entries.
Storytellers’ Club is a great concept and although you may not know in advance which comedians are appearing, the lucky dip element just adds to the fun.
