From the minute Zane enters on stage an atmosphere of excited energy descends on the crowd and he skips from one side to the other addressing members of the front row. His show attempts to concentrate on his quirks and peculiarities, which self-confessed oddball Zane decides to describe in terms of his school career. The audience on this particular night had other ideas.
When describing what his mother would put on his sandwiches and woman from the audience shouts out “I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO SAY PEANUT BUTTER!” This exclamation becomes one of many as Zane addresses each rowdy member with a little conversation and then works them into his comedy act. His audience interaction actually turns out to be the funniest part of his act as at times he trips over himself and begins to ad-lib during his written set.
Zane is incredibly endearing though and it becomes clear that all female members of the audience are just dying for the opportunity to talk to him, with one girl even admitting to having irritable bowel syndrome in an attempt to garner some attention from Zane. These instances lend themselves well to Zane’s style of humour and end up really being the focal points of the act. This leaves to question though how successful the show would’ve been had the audience been slightly more timid.
Zane’s charming and lovable personality gives him an edge over other standard stand-up routines but he’ll need to pull something a little bit more original out of the bag to become a must-see at the Fringe. The audience somewhat stole the show.
