The Tiger Lilies return to the Edinburgh Fringe like the last sober remnants of a carnival wedding. Sampling their impressive back catalogue of brutal ballads and infectious melodies they offer something for all fans of schadenfreude. Whether you’re a long time fan or a cabaret virgin’s straight off the street you’ll be treated to such an extravaganza of energetic bass, anarchistic percussion and falsetto gutter wit that the hour will simply disappear. The melodramatic theatrics of the Tiger Lilies in full swing is a dark pantomime of double takes and inflatable sheep as they see-saw between perversity and melancholy. As a live band the Tiger Lilies are a hard to even approach let alone beat.
While the music is for the most part taken directly from the better known parts of their catalogue they include some tracks in a very traditional New Orleans Blues style that may surprise purists. It may seem as if they’re being used in ironic fashion when set next to tracks like Masturbating Jimmy but these tracks show the range the Tiger Lilies are capable of and remind the audience that they are as accomplished musicians as they are comedians.
The performance is simply spectacular and to say more would be gilding the lilly.
