It is always difficult to follow on from a hit show, but Wild Card Kitty has stepped up to the challenge. Fresh from producing the highly acclaimed Bongo Club Cabaret, Kitty has created her own brand-new burlesque show, the deliciously named Your Little Princess Is My Little Whore.
This is a show with a message, as it explores the themes of obsession, vanity and how females are made to feel inadequate about their bodies by the media. Mixing playful humour with its core message, the show combines burlesque, physical comedy and video segments all performed brilliantly by Kitty and her hand-picked cast of female performers.
Its opening segment parodies what many have come to assume burlesque is: girls in corsets, pulling off their gloves with their teeth as they strip and sway to music. It knowingly tells the audience to expect greater things, for this show is far more than an hour of women repeatedly stripping down to their underwear. Kitty has created a show which explores widely different aspects of femininity, while remaining inventive and funny throughout. She rides a huge tampon bucking-bronco style, a giant magazine cover repeatedly taunts the women and old ladies stumble on to a fountain of youth. This is not your typical burlesque!
Some of the scenes do come dangerously close to repeating themselves, for example woman obsessively rubbing a magazine over her body isn’t too dissimilar from a later scene in which a woman compulsively un-creases her wedding dress. But, with such excellent performances to some great musical choices, the audience are having far too much fun to care.
Thought provoking, entertaining and great fun; I, for one, can’t wait to see what Wild Card Kitty will bring to the table next.
