Celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frédéric Chopin, David Wilde returns to Edinburgh, performing a complete recital of Chopin’s incredible music in an enchanting and acoustically perfect venue – St Mary’s Cathedral.
An entertaining and lively performer, the audience is perhaps drawn as much to the music as to Wilde himself! With energy and passion, he opens the performance with Fantasie in f minor, Opus 49, and flawlessly executes the rhythm and flow of Chopin that only a veteran of the Romantic piano tradition can.
Met with raucous applause, Wilde continues onto a piece that he personally holds dear; Sonata No 2 in b flat minor [Funeral March Sonata]. Confiding in the audience, he explains that many musicians and Professors believe that this piece was so ahead of its time that “Chopin was a 20th Century man trapped by an unfortunate birth into the 1800’s.”
Finishing the evening with Polonaise in A flat, Opus 53 [‘The Heroic’], the audience bursts into inspired applause and, refusing to let the maestro away, demands an encore! Returning to the stage, Wilde proclaims “Well, there is always time for a Chopin Waltz.”
An incredible venue showcasing delightful and dark compositions performed by inspiring superstar of the piano world – who could ask for more?
