We all know the story of Peter Pan and Wendy, flying off to Neverland for a life full of adventure. But what happened to those left behind? Imagine the confusion and the search for Wendy which ensued; imagine trying to convince the police that you saw her fly off with a boy without a shadow…
‘Following Wendy’ is a grown-up take on the classic story, placing events in the present day and showing us the horribly realistic consequences of a Wendy’s disappearance. The concept is superb, adding a a dark and gritty edge to a well-loved tale. The script cleverly takes details from Barrie’s Peter Pan and turns them on their heads, leaving the audience looking at events in a whole new light. One scene – where Peter and Tinkerbell repeat the same lines over and over – seemed weak in comparison to the otherwise tight script, but overall the play is a fantastic piece of writing.
With no set and minimal props, the talented young cast bring the story to life through polished physical theatre. The actors playing Peter Pan and Tinkerbell are particularly strong, and their depiction of the relationship between Peter and the fairy adds another layer to the story. The timing in the dialogue and actions between the two police officers is also superb.
The audience are gripped as events unfold, and the story takes a dark and unexpected twist. You will never look at Peter Pan in the same way again!
