The atmosphere in the HMV Picturehouse is positively eerie as you sit waiting for Shrink, the lights are a dim red and the creepy tones of his “Induction Music” pervade the room. This show is billed as being “not for the faint hearted” and as Shrink begins to hypnotise the volunteers that have collected on the stage you can see why. Tapping each on the shoulder and whispering in their ear you see everything from large women to giant men succumb to a false sleep, slumping backwards to the ground. If you had arrived with an air of scepticism about hypnotism, Shrink does everything within his power to dispel this.
While almost all of the volunteers manage to fall into an induced sleep, the actual feat of getting them to do things appears to be much harder. Soon Shrink is left with only four volunteers, but each appears to be deeply under his spell. One guy strips to his waist to raunchy music before awakening to confusion, Shrink then sends him back under before reassuring him that this is how he was dressed when he arrived, re-awakening him to sitting back down comfortable in the knowledge he’s in appropriate attire.
While the show promises to be funny, the real humour is for those who get the chance to watch their friends lose all their inhibitions in front of the crowd. Seeing Shrink challenges your perceptions and beliefs and is the perfect show to bring a group of mates to.
