One of the most packed venues at this years festival for its size by far, The Late Night Gimp Fight quintet explode into view from a collection of laundry bags leading to the first laugh of the evening. From then onwards things get stranger and abundantly funnier. The comedians use perverse, juvenile, puerile and homoerotic comedy to convey multiple variations of depravity in their humour but with this title for a show it would be naive to expect anything else.
The show leaves no illicit subject matter untouched and the cast are quite clearly reveling in the degeneracy of their material. From child abuse to violence to nudity and beyond they leave no stone unturned and their efforts are rewarded in the raucous laughter that they receive in return. Surprisingly the quintet also use songs within their performance that, regardless of the content, are harmonic and rehearsed to an exceptionally high standard which further proves that these performers really do care about what they produce. The whole show is further enhanced but the use of video material where they have taken some of the most iconic film and music video material and intersperse their own gimpish twist within. Such moments as Whitney Houston professing her unending love for Late Night Gimp Fight is particularly memorable along with Oliver Twist wanting much more of what the gimps have to offer.
This is the perfect late night festival show but if you are a comedy tyrant who thinks that all comedy must be intelligent and hold some sort of mirror up to the in depth workings of our social culture then it may not be for you. Otherwise, you’ll love it!
