Mixing a simple storyline that imitates those seen in sitcoms (a la Friends or How I Met Your Mother) with some quick sketches (all part of the main story), Rule of Three come out winning the audience over.
In all fairness, the story is just mere background for the sketches, but these blend in nicely, and allow the three charming performers to impersonate different characters and situations. As such, Brooks Livermore, Roisin Rae and James Card are transformed from relationship-experts to pizza delivery boys, to Australian Gym lover and a big array of other people at the drop of a hat.
Some of these are slightly ill-advised, but the majority of them are done to hilarious effects. Roisin Rae, particularly, excels in her role as a boring stripper, with a fantastic dead pan delivery and some comically visual treats.
Towards the end, when all the characters meet at a birthday party, the show becomes a bit too chaotic for its own good, but the sense of fun and enjoyment that the three actor’s exude, never let the production become tedious or repetitive.
It might not be the funniest or the most clever, but Rule of Show is certainly entertaining, and sometimes, that is all you need. A good hour to be had, save this show for a rainy day. This being Edinburgh, you might as well book early.
