If you want a show which is entertaining, humorous, has good acting, amazing singing, dancing and jazz hands, Plague! The Musical is the one. This wonderful family show is set in around the 1700s and is a funny musical about Clive, who comes to London to seek his fortune as an actor, but instead trains as an undertaker, and unwittingly unleashes the bubonic plague.
This cast are a talented group. Ted McMillan is a fantastic Clive, and his sidekick Jerry, played by Alyn Evans is well suited to his role and does a sterling job. However, the undoubted star of this production is the Alchemist, Charlie Swan, whose interpretation of this character is excellent, and has the audience crying with laughter (he also plays one of the beggars and is just as outstanding in this role). Having said that though, there is not one actor in this production that does not deserve an independent mention, as every one of the cast plays his or her role to perfection, and the show would be lacking if any one of them was missing. They are not only good actors, but their singing is superb. Look out for the excellent Mafia accents of the three rats, Anna Brook-Mitchell, Mark Slowey and Mark-John Forbes.
A projector screen makes the set changes easy and effective, and with the fantastic costumes, jokes for young and old, hilarious song words, disco dancing Druids, and the “Philosophers Gnome”, if you only catch one family show this Festival, make sure it is this one.
