Sketch comedy meets improvisation, The Leeds Tealights have blended both to create a fast and sharp hour of entertainment. Though slightly disposable and forgettable, the show bombards the audience with a constant flux of different sketches, never really letting the public breathe, nor the jokes sink in.
That this foursome are funny goes without saying, but the show truly peaks when the sketch comes to a halt, and they let some improvised banter happen. That’s when you can see their talent flourish, instead of seeing them rush to the end of the segment, in order to get the next one going. That they manage to link puns between the sketches bodes well for The Leeds Tealight, since not a lot of sketch-groups tend to do this.
On the whole, The Leeds Tealight provide a good comedy hour, and their sketches though not groundbreaking, tend to be inventive. Their NSPCC-like appeal is a riot, while the conversation between policemen on how a man has committed suicide (while the mother is in the room with them) has the audience in fits of laughter.
There is no denying though, that by the end of the show, you have a sense of deja vu, as similar sketches are rolled out in front of you, with similar puns and nods to the audience. Some more time in the drawing board should help ease this problem, and (if they decide to come back) their 2011 run would benefit from it. We should await their return.
