Casual Violence! are a Brighton and London based comedy collective who specialise in the bringing daft, flippant humour to some menacing and dark stories. A quick list of some of their previous and highly popular production should give you a clear idea of what we are talking about here- ‘Porn for the blind and other stories’, ‘The gradual decline of a previously tight family unit’ and ‘The C**t Monologues’.
Their newest production, ‘Choose Death’, follows a similar, macabre tone of the likes of League of Gentlemen but with a much, much sillier sense of humour.
The tale follows the eventual, varied deaths of six weird and highly dysfunctional characters such as an armless granny killer, Siamese-twin hit men and the best a suicidal bubble-gun sales man.
Combining comedy with the tragic is notoriously difficult but somehow the game and lively cast have created quite a strange and abhorrent tale, that is that in between the funny has some genuine and earnest things to say about life. Mainly that we are all going to go so you may as well do it with a grin on your face.
Its not for everyone but if you can get behind the daft level of humour there is much to enjoy with the intricately fleshed out creations and their individual stories. Intelligently written, deliciously dark and made all the better by a live soundtrack choose to treat yourself to a ticket.
