Best known as an impersonator of well known sporting stars, celebrities and politicians alike, everyone knows what Alistair does, but not necessarily who he is. A hard working and talented man, the show ‘Alistair McGowan: The One and Many’showcased a plethora of well known characters for the hugely varied audience. Doing something for everyone, he managed to move swiftly from Dad’s Army in one sketch to X Factor in the next.
As part of the audience at Alistair’s show you feel like you are in the presence of well, many. One minute you can be sitting listening to Alan Hanson and his take on the day’s football events, to suddenly being faced by ‘Proffessor Snape’, Alan Rickman’s character in the Harry Potter series. In his company the audience are made to feel like they are really with Dylan Moran, such is the talent of Alistair’s impressions – he delivers each impersonation with the same movement and expressions that each would make.
However the best received work and the sections which please the audience the most are the personal anecdotes from and about Alistair himself. Delivering clever and witty poems about the Edinburgh Trams, and turning into his father are the highlight of the show. Gaining even more of an insight into his life and his thoughts, these sections serve as a break from the impressions – however they could quite easily be expanded into a full show on Alistair. Not a stand up yet, Alistair could easily entertain audiences in a format similar to stand up and gain even more laughs.
